Wow it was close! After all the votes were counted the "Professional Choice" winner of the "Modeling Experience 2009" is Ari. We are glad Ari and Monique are good friends because it was neck and neck between them to the end. Thanks to all of the models for participating in the experience. We had a great time working with and getting to know Ari, Asia, Casey, Eli, Fabian, Kaitlyn and Monique. We especially want to mention Asia and the "guys" Fabian and Eli. We were impressed how they progressed through the experience. Casey had some great outfits and we really liked Kaitlyn's free spirit. My personal favorite session was Monique's design session. She looked wonderful in every image.
We are already talking about next year's experience. This was our second year of doing the experience. Our goal is to make each year's experience better than the one before. I really appreciated everyone's patience this year as we worked through some bugs with the voting.

Ok I (Bill) take responsibility for the voting frenzy. I have tried to keep things fair and workable but have really just muffed it up. I didn't provide enough guidelines and rules or an adequate explanation and so I am publicly apologizing to the models and their family and friends.

When we first started you were asked to vote by email. That had it's problems because people were putting multiple names on an email or saying that they were voting for grandma because she didn't have email. Plus it took me forever to count and keep track of because I had to open each email up to see who it was from and who they were voting for. Frankly I was too busy photographing the models, processing their images and making their slide shows to keep track that way so I changed the voting to the comments section of the blog. People then emailed me concerned because they couldn't vote because they were not Gmail registered. So I changed the settings to allow anyone to vote. Once again we had people placing multiple votes on a comment so I changed things again to one vote per comment. Now I see comments coming in in spurts within just a couple of minutes and I wonder just how so many people can be voting all at the same time. So... I goofed and I need to do something to make it right. Not everyone will be happy with me but this is it.

Week 4 is a TIE between Monique and Casey. You both are apparently putting in a great deal of effort getting all of your families and friends to vote for you. Today the numbers are going up like mad. You each will get the award for the week and you both will be awarded 200 votes for the week.

Now for week five. I don't want to discourage anyone and I do appreciate every one's interest but we have to change things for week five. I may just be making things worse and you may be mad at me but I really just want things to be perceived as fair. So starting now all votes must be placed on my email at billvancuran@gmail.com. Only one vote per email and the vote must be made by the person voting. They must leave their full name on the email. I am sorry if grandma does have email but if she doesn't she obviously can't vote.
I hope this doesn't dampen your spirits regarding the voting. There is still a $25 gift card to give out for week 5 (Design) plus the personalized T-shirt and the bragging rights. All seven models still have a chance to be a weekly people's choice winner. Plus... the overall people's choice winner is still up for grabs. That is the model with the most total votes. That's the $100 prize. BTW I will post current totals soon and I will give credit for votes received up to this moment.
Thanks you for your patience with me. We had tried to do somethings different this year with the modeling experience to make it better and more interesting but I have certainly have learned some lessons regarding things that don't work so well.

The professional choice voting will be taking place toward the end of this week and the winner of that competition will be announced early next week. Again it was close thru half the week but Casey and Monique put on a blistering finish with Casey coming out the winner. Casey had 337 votes with her junior friends really helping her, Monique had 280 votes with a number of her junior friends helping, Eli had 43, Ari had 38, and Kaitlyn had 7. Update on Modeling Experience '09

Hi Models and friends:
I just wanted to congratulate all our models on "getting out the vote". The competition has been fierce with the lead changing daily. Dennis is in the process of compiling the current vote totals and we will let you know where everyone stands.
I need all of the models to email me back with your T-shirt size. We want to provide the weekly winner with a nice custom printed t-shirt as one of the weekly prizes for the "People's Choice".
I posted an update on the blog regarding the voting. For next week I'm asking that the people that vote for you first look at your images on the blog to qualify to vote. I realize that we are on the honor system and that there is some heavy competition but I trust you. That's my nature. Lets be fair and let's have fun!
I am working on the guide sheets for next week (SLSquared) standing, sitting, leaning and lying. You can also look in magazines and clothing catalogs to get ideas. I will mail them to you when available.
We are going to be having a "Genius Squad" think tank meeting for our models on Sunday May 18 between 3:00 and 4:00. This will be to discuss what you have thought of the experience and this will give us a chance to ask how we can improve things. Please come come and bring one or both of your parents and perhaps a friend. There will be refreshments and we will be displaying and showcasing your images in our gallery. We hope you will come, this will be a big help to us to get your feedback and also your ideas.
We are now half way through photographing for the headshots session. We will post every ones show and some images late Saturday night. Voting starts Sunday for the "Headshots" session. We have had some questions regarding the competition and voting so here is the scoop. Each week you can vote for your favorite model for the weekly "People's Choice" Award. Those votes will also continue to add up for an overall "people's Choice" winner. So if your model participates in all 5 weeks you can vote for them 5 times! There will also be a Professional Judges Winner which will be chosen by professional photographers across the country.
So far the competition has been fierce. Ari, Casey and Monique have had people submitting votes for them constantly yesterday and today and are very close. Asia had a large group of votes come in this afternoon as has Kaitlyn. With several days to go it's anyones guess who will be this weeks winner. This weeks voting closes Saturday Night at midnight and we will announce the WOW week winner on Monday.

Modeling Experience '09 Starts

Saturday we kicked off our '09 version of The Modeling Experience. This years Experience is designed to be a lot more like the competition you see on TV and will give each model a progressive experience on what it is like to model. Our first session is the simplest called the WOW (white on white) session, It is a head and shoulders session utilizing a white background and models in white or very light tops. There will be five sessions in all. Each one will progress in involvement with the last being the "Design Session" where each model will take everything they have learned and design their own custom session where they get to go over the top showing what they have learned and display their personality. The models will be competing for weekly "Peoples Choice" Awards and a Professionally judged Grand Price Winner will be chosen from the model who scores the highest total on 3 of the 5 sessions. The Grand Prize Winner will receive a prize package worth over $500 including $250 cash. To compete for this the models have to participate in at east 3 of the sessions. Our model selection is pretty much set for this year but we do have a couple more openings available. To be eligible to participate the participant must currently be a junior in high school.

Ari is a Junior at Amherst Hight School. She called and was interested in being photographed in the snow. She looks great and was a lot of fun to photograph. It was cold and she was a good sport about climbing thru the snow to get a great shot. The coats and hats she brought with her really helped make the session. We enjoyed the snow but since Ari plays softball for Marion L. Steele H.S. so I am sure she hopes the snow won't last too much longer. We also look forward to a little better weather so we can finish up our 08 seniors and work on the '09 senior models to try our new locations and sets. We also still have a few openings for the '09 Modeling Experience so if you are a H.S. Junior contact us to apply. Ask Ari, it's a lot of fun.

Tyler Smith is the Senior Buzz featured senior of the week. He is 17 and a senior at Steele High School in Amherst. He played split end on the football team. Tyler is a great student and balances his studies with working at the Moosehead Bbq Grill in Amherst. We asked Tyler to tell us more about himself and here is what we found out.

Make up Tips for Portraits

Sure you are young and beautiful but everyone can benefit from proper make up for portraits. Many people tell me that they like the natural look but I can guarantee you that even those people will be thankful that they made a little effort to slightly "improve" on nature. After all, poop is natural but it doesn't look good in a picture. But seriously, I recommend that you consider the make up suggestions in this chart, you will look better and your portraits will look better too, and most importantly everyone will say you look terrific! If I ever get around to posting my portrait in the "my profile" area, you will agree that a little make up and retouching can do wonders even for an old poop.

Fantastic Modeling Opportunity!

We are still in the process of selecting our models to help us create new and exciting looks and sets for the 2008 senior season. We will be having an open call in a couple weeks (exact date to be announced soon) . This will involve coming to the studio, (we are located on Middle Ridge Road in Amherst) and completing a short interview with our style consultant. We will then take 3 or 4 images of you for selection purposes. We will be giving you small jpeg files of these portraits for your own use just for coming in. We are looking for 8 juniors to model for us. The actual sessions will be in late March or early April. We want to work with a stylist and make up person and hope to make arrangements with a local clothing store to have some cool outfits available. The sessions will consist of about 2 hours in studio and 2 hours on location in the Amherst area. We will be paying our models $50 for their services. The open call is for any interested junior. No experience is necessary and we are not necessarily looking for just the "best looking people". Personality and poise will have a lot to do with our selection. Email me back if you would like us to contact you for an interview time during the open call.
